Gas storage

Gas storage is of strategic importance for energy independence, supply stability, and mitigating fluctuations in natural gas prices on the commodity market.

Underground gas storage offers a number of advantages:

  1. Ensuring supplies: Gas storage allows for balancing the differences between gas imports and consumption. Natural gas consumption is significantly affected by weather conditions. The stored natural gas thus enables a stable supply of gas to companies and households in situations when gas supply from abroad would no longer be sufficient.
  2. Ensuring energy security: Energy security is a fundamental aspect of national sovereignty and economic stability. Gas storage allows countries to minimize risks associated with disruptions in foreign gas supplies or sudden changes in energy markets.
  3. Price stabilization: Storing gas during periods of low prices allows countries to buy fuel on favourable terms and use it when prices are higher. This can help stabilise energy prices for consumers.
  4. Infrastructure optimization: Storage capacities are part of the energy infrastructure that supports the flow of gas from production facilities and border transfer points to points of consumption. This improves the overall efficiency and reliability of supply.
  5. Handling emergency situations: Gas storage can play a crucial role in managing emergencies, such as natural disasters, geopolitical conflicts, or technical failures. Access to reserves allows for a rapid and effective response to crises.
  6. Supporting the development of renewable energy sources: Gas storage can serve as a backup energy source during times when renewable sources like solar and wind power cannot produce energy (e.g. at night or in windless conditions). This facilitates the transition to low-carbon energy systems.

Cross-border gas storage

SPP Storage is the only company in the Czech Republic operating a cross-border gas storage facility. The specific feature of this storage is its connection to transmission systems of two countries using its own infrastructure (pipeline). The underground storage facility in Dolní Bojanovice is connected to the gas distribution systems of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.


SPP Storage, s.r.o. plans to launch the cross-border gas storage service on 1st April 2025.

Surface technology

The surface technology of the underground gas storage is divided into the following groups:

  • Technological equipment for wells and gas pipeline connections
  • Technological equipment for injection (flood)
  • Technological equipment for gas withdrawal
  • Underground gas storage control system

Underground section of the storage facility

Natural gas is stored in the underground storage within a natural porous rock formation called reservoir. This reservoir is surrounded by impermeable rock that prevents gas leakage. These reservoirs are commonly composed of sandstone but can also consist of salt rocks or limestone.


Reservoirs can be either natural or artificially created. Natural reservoirs are typically former oil and gas deposits that have already been depleted. This is also the case with our underground reservoir. Artificial reservoirs are usually created by extracting rock.

The underground section of our gas reservoir consists of four separate compounds located at depths ranging from 700 to 2100 meters below ground:

  • MAIN COMPOUND (1) - the largest underground storage structure, divided into three interconnected blocks by minor faults (with average storage depth being approximately 1600m)
  • LENTICLES (2) - the second-largest storage structure, located at a mean depth of approx. 1800m
  • LÁBSKÝ HORIZON SOUTHEAST (3) - originally a small oil and gas reservoir located at a depth of approximately 2000m
  • SARMAT (4) - a storage structure originally containing gas located at a depth of around 700m
